Mosquito, SEM
Mosquito. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an unidentified mosquito (family Culicidae). The two large, multi-faceted compound eyes dominate the head (pink, upper left). The long thin antennae (upper centre) and palps (lower centre) are sensory structures. Two of the mosquitos legs lead off to top right and centre left. The body (blue) has wings attached to either side. The proboscis (not seen) is a needle-like structure used by the male to feed on plant liquids, and by the female to feed on mammalian blood. Several mosquito species are vectors for human diseases such as malaria and yellow fever. Magnification: x40 at 6x7cm size
