Moth antenna, SEM

Moth antenna hairs. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of part of an antenna of an early thorn moth (Selenia dentaria). The antenna runs across lower left, with branches pointing towards upper right. These branches, which end in spikes, are covered in sensory hairs. These hairs can sense movement and smell, enabling the moth to detect food sources and a mate. The branching structure ensures that there are a large number of hairs to form a large surface area for detecting trace chemicals in the air. This is one of the antennae of a male moth. Male moth antennae are more sensitive to aid the detection of a female. Magnification: x75 when printed 10cm wide
