Neanderthal skull, muscles and head
Neanderthal heads (Homo neanderthalensis), artwork. The skull is at top, the facial musculature at centre and the head at bottom. Neanderthals had several physical differences to modern humans. In the skull, these include more prominent brow ridges, a broader, flatter nose and a projecting mid-face region. Neanderthals were relatives of humans that inhabited Europe and western Asia between around 230, 000 and 29, 000 years ago. The physical differences are thought to have been adaptations to the cold environment in which they lived, as Europe was a far cooler region in that period. They did not use complex tools but had mastery of fire and built shelters. It is not known why they became extinct, but many suspect they were outcompeted by modern humans

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a Neanderthal skull, muscles, and head. The top section displays the distinct features of the skull, including prominent brow ridges, a broad and flat nose, as well as a projecting mid-face region. These physical differences from modern humans are believed to be adaptations to the cold environment in which they thrived thousands of years ago. Neanderthals were our ancient relatives who inhabited Europe and western Asia between 230,000 and 29,000 years ago. This artwork sheds light on their existence during that time period when Europe was considerably cooler than it is today. Despite not utilizing complex tools like modern humans did, Neanderthals possessed advanced skills such as fire mastery and shelter construction. The mystery surrounding their extinction remains unsolved; however, many speculate that they were outcompeted by our ancestors. This thought-provoking image invites us to reflect upon our shared history with these remarkable beings who once roamed the Earth. With its monochromatic aesthetic and attention to detail, this illustration captures both the scientific significance and artistic beauty of paleoanthropology. It serves as a reminder of how far we have come in understanding our evolutionary journey while also igniting curiosity about what else lies hidden within our prehistoric past.
