Paranthropus aethiopicus skull (KNM-WT 17000). This extinct species, a very early part of the human evolutionary tree, is also known as Australopithecus aethiopicus. This fossil specimen dates from around 2.5 million years ago. It was discovered in 1985, on the west shore of Lake Turkana, Kenya.
