Planetary nebula, X-ray composite
Planetary nebula. Combined X-ray and optical image of the planetary nebula BD+30-3639. A planetary nebula is a bubble of hot gas and dust, many times the size of our solar system, expanding outwards from a dying, Sun-like star. The nebula consists of the ejected outer layers of the star. The optical part of this image (orange) was obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The hotter, X-ray emitting region (blue, centre) was imaged with the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO). Both the HST and CXO are telescopes in Earth orbit. BD+30- 3639 is around 5000 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Cygnus

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the mesmerizing beauty of a planetary nebula known as BD+30-3639. The image showcases a remarkable combination of X-ray and optical views, providing us with an extraordinary glimpse into the depths of our universe. Located approximately 5000 light years away in the constellation of Cygnus, this planetary nebula is formed from the expelled outer layers of a dying star similar to our Sun. The expanding bubble of hot gas and dust stretches many times larger than our entire solar system, creating an ethereal spectacle that astounds astronomers and stargazers alike. The orange hues in the optical part of the image were captured by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), revealing intricate details and delicate structures within the nebula. In contrast, the vibrant blue center represents the hotter region emitting X-rays, which was imaged using Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO). Both telescopes orbiting Earth have played crucial roles in unraveling celestial mysteries and advancing our understanding of stellar evolution. This composite photograph serves as a testament to their combined power and capabilities. As we marvel at this cosmic masterpiece, let it remind us how vast and awe-inspiring our universe truly is. It invites us to contemplate not only star death but also new beginnings, reminding us that even amidst destruction there is always room for creation.
