EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed Rudolph Snellius, a prominent Dutch mathematician who left an indelible mark on the intellectual landscape of his time. Born as Rudolph Snel von Royen in Oudewater, Snellius embarked on a remarkable academic journey that took him to Cologne and Heidelberg for his studies before securing a teaching position at Marburg. Renowned for his unorthodox approach to education, Snellius diverged from traditional Aristotelian logic and instead taught the innovative logic of Ramus alongside mathematics and multiple languages. This unconventional pedagogical style earned him great admiration among students and colleagues alike. In 1578, he returned to his hometown of Oudewater and assumed a prestigious post at Leiden University. It was during this period that Snellius exerted significant influence over some of the most influential figures in politics and intellect during the Dutch Golden Age, ultimately shaping their perspectives on both religious reformations and philosophical doctrines. Notably, Snellius's son Willebrord also made notable contributions to science as an astronomer who devised Snells Law. This engraving captures Rudolph Snellius's profound impact on academia and society as a whole. Printed in 1613 by van Meurs Illustris Academia Lugd-Batava in Leiden, this monochrome engraving serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of this exceptional scholar. Its vertical composition adds depth while emphasizing the gravity of Snellius's role
