Saharan dust plume, Bay of Biscay C016 / 3874

Saharan dust plume, Bay of Biscay. Satellite image of a dust plume (brown) from the Sahara, stretching across the Bay of Biscay and the Atlantic from Spain (lower right) to Ireland and the UK (top). North is at top, with France at right. The iron content of dust plumes provides nutrients for phytoplankton, microscopic organisms found in the seas and oceans. The blue swath (centre right) off the coast of France is a phytoplankton bloom, though it is probably not related to the dust plumes appearing in this image. Image data obtained on 8 April 2011 by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASAs Terra satellite

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring Saharan dust plume as it stretches across the Bay of Biscay and the Atlantic. Taken from space on April 8,2011, by NASA's Terra satellite using the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), this image showcases a remarkable natural phenomenon. The brown hue of the dust plume originating from the Sahara Desert is clearly visible, spanning from Spain in the lower right corner to Ireland and the United Kingdom at the top. The iron content within these dust particles serves as a vital nutrient source for phytoplankton, microscopic organisms found in oceans and seas. Interestingly, amidst this vast expanse of dusty brown lies a striking blue swath off France's coast. This area represents a phytoplankton bloom; however, it is unlikely related to the Saharan dust plumes seen here. The intricate details captured by MODIS also reveal clouds swirling above and winds shaping this atmospheric spectacle. With North positioned at the top of this image and France situated on its right side, we gain an appreciation for both geographical features and meteorological patterns that influence our planet's ecosystems. Jeff Schmaltz skillfully immortalizes this breathtaking scene through his lens while being part of NASA's Rapid Response Team. This extraordinary photograph not only highlights Earth observation but also emphasizes how interconnected biological processes are with our environment.
