Silver torch, 20th century

Nineteenth century self-administering clyster (a type of enema syringe). The enema is a medical procedure whereby fluid is introduced to the rectum and colon via the anus. The expansion of the lower intestinal tract brought about by this fluid prompts its evacuation. The use of enema procedures dates back to ancient Egypt (circa 1500 B.C.) and has been used therapeutically throughout history for conditions such as fever and constipation. The plunger would be used to force liquid (usually water) out of the pewter cylinder, into the nozzle, and into the anus. The bent nozzle allowed for self-administration, avoiding the embarrassment of involving a second person in the administration of the enema

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Science Photo Library showcases a remarkable artifact from the 19th century - a silver torch known as the "Nineteenth Century Self-Administering Clyster". This unique instrument was used for enema procedures, an ancient medical practice dating back to around 1500 B. C. in Egypt. Enemas were employed throughout history to alleviate various conditions such as fever and constipation. The procedure involved introducing fluid into the rectum and colon through the anus, stimulating bowel movements by expanding the lower intestinal tract. In this particular device, a plunger would force water or other liquids out of a pewter cylinder and into a bent nozzle designed for self-administration. What makes this clyster syringe intriguing is its ability to allow individuals to administer enemas privately without involving another person. By enabling self-treatment, it aimed to spare patients any potential embarrassment associated with seeking assistance during such intimate medical procedures. The photograph beautifully captures this historical artifact against a serene blue background, emphasizing its intricate design and craftsmanship. It serves as both a testament to our evolving understanding of medicine throughout time and an appreciation for how far gastroenterology has advanced since then.
