Taste bud, light micrograph

Taste bud. Coloured light micrograph of a section through the tongue, showing a taste bud. This taste bud is seen as a round purple mass slightly to the right of the vertical white line. The white groove is part of the large pink papilla (tongue projection) seen at centre. Taste buds are mostly located on the papillae on the tongue but are also scattered on the palate, pharynx and epiglottis. They are situated in an epithelial layer (purple) and have a taste pore that is exposed to the food meeting the tongue. Four types of taste are recognised: sweet, bitter, acid and salt. Although each taste is recognised on a different region of the tongue, the buds have the same structure throughout. Magnification: x320 when printed 10cm tall

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a taste bud, as seen through a light micrograph. The image reveals a round purple mass, representing the taste bud itself, positioned slightly to the right of a vertical white line. At the center, we observe a large pink papilla, which is a projection on the tongue. Taste buds are predominantly found on these papillae but can also be scattered across other areas such as the palate, pharynx, and epiglottis. The taste bud resides within an epithelial layer that appears in shades of purple in this false-colored image. It possesses a tiny opening called the taste pore that comes into contact with food when it meets our tongues. Four primary tastes - sweet, bitter, acid (sour), and salt - are recognized by these remarkable sensory receptors. Despite each type of taste being detected in different regions of our tongues, all taste buds share similar structures throughout. This particular photograph has been magnified 320 times its original size to provide us with incredible detail and insight into this essential aspect of human biology. With its vibrant colors and fascinating subject matter, this print from Science Photo Library offers viewers an opportunity to appreciate both the complexity and elegance present within our own bodies.
