Plan of building land near Pond Street to be sold by auction, 1860
Formerly the site of the Pond Tilt and Dam, containing 14, 529 square yards or thereabouts, with two dwelling houses thereon fronting to Pond Street aforesaid, in the occupation of John Senior and Joseph Holmes. The land has extensive frontage to the River Porter, from which, as also from the River Sheaf, it has the right of water, and is well adapted for the erection of manufactories, breweries, and any business requiring water; or it could be advantageously laid out in building lots for dwelling hoses. It is in a central situation, and easy approachable from the railway station and canal.Surveyor: S. F. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from 1860 showcases the "Plan of building land near Pond Street to be sold by auction". Formerly the site of the Pond Tilt and Dam, this expansive piece of land spans approximately 14,529 square yards. Nestled alongside the picturesque River Porter, it also enjoys water rights from the nearby River Sheaf. The two charming dwelling houses that grace its frontage on Pond Street are currently occupied by John Senior and Joseph Holmes. However, this versatile plot offers immense potential for various ventures requiring access to water sources such as manufactories, breweries, or any business seeking a reliable water supply. Alternatively, this prime location could be thoughtfully developed into individual building lots for delightful residential homes. Its central position ensures easy accessibility from both the railway station and canal. Surveyor S. F. Holmes meticulously crafted this detailed plan while Pawson and Brailsford skillfully brought it to life through lithography. The original document is now preserved at Sheffield Local Studies Library under Sale Plans dated April 10th, 1860. Immerse yourself in history with this remarkable image capturing a moment frozen in time—a testament to Sheffield's rich heritage and its evolving urban landscape intertwined with nature's flowing rivers and streams.
