Tanks being loaded onto Rectank flat wagons, c. 1940

Three tanks are being loaded onto Rectank flat wagons which were designed and built specifically for the movement of military vehicles by rail. The GW lettering on the side of the Rectank shows that the railway company owned the wagons in this image. Many of the other wagons used to transport military equipment were owned by the War Department and then shared between the various railway companies as and when they were needed. The careful manoeuvre of these tanks is being overseen by a number of both military and railway personnel. STEAM - Museum of the Great Western Railway. © STEAM - Museum of the GWR
