A gas giant planet orbiting a red dwarf star
This is an artists concept of a gas giant planet orbiting the cool, red dwarf star Gliese 876, located 15 light-years away in the autumn constellation Aquarius. The planet was discovered in 1998. But new Hubble Space Telescope measurements of the stars wobble, caused by the gravitational tug of the planet, firmly establish the planets mass as being no more than approximately twice that of Jupiter s. The planet is only one fifth the distance from the star as the Earth is from the Sun. Though it is too far away to be photographed by present day telescopes, the planet is presumably a gas giant world that might be encircled by moons, as imagined in this illustration. Gliese 876 also has an inner planet with a mass only half that of Jupiter s, as estimated by earlier ground-based observations. The inner gas planet in the system appears as a bright star-like object near the red dwarf. Despite its close proximity to Earth, the red dwarf star is one third the mass of our Sun and is too faint to be seen by the naked eye

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an artist's concept of a mesmerizing celestial phenomenon - a gas giant planet gracefully orbiting the cool, red dwarf star Gliese 876. Located 15 light-years away in the autumn constellation Aquarius, this distant planetary system has fascinated astronomers since its discovery in 1998. Thanks to groundbreaking measurements from the Hubble Space Telescope, we now have a clearer understanding of this enigmatic gas giant. With a mass no more than twice that of Jupiter's, it is believed to be encircled by ethereal moons, as beautifully depicted in this illustration. Remarkably, this colossal planet resides at only one-fifth the distance between Earth and our Sun. While present-day telescopes cannot capture direct images of this awe-inspiring celestial body, scientists estimate that Gliese 876 also harbors an inner gas planet with half the mass of Jupiter. This inner world appears as a radiant star-like object near the red dwarf itself. Despite its proximity to Earth within cosmic scales, Gliese 876 remains elusive to our naked eye due to its diminutive size - merely one-third the mass of our own Sun. Nevertheless, through artistic renderings like this remarkable piece by Stocktrek Images, we can marvel at the wonders unfolding beyond our reach and continue unraveling the mysteries hidden within these distant corners of space.
