The Migrants Farewell, 1844. Creator: Unknown

The Migrants Farewell, 1844. British working class families travelling to Canada, Australia and other colonies:vast numbers of persons have availed themselves of the Government grant to quit their native shores for the purpose of seeking a better subsistence in the land of the stranger; and when we look at the existing condition of a considerable portion of our agricultural and manufacturing population, it excites but little wonder that a feverish restlessness should arise for change. The application form stated...their name written by themselves (if they can write).... Male applicants considered were...agricultural labourers, shepherds, bricklayers, and masons, wheelwrights, smiths, carpenters... and must be...honest, industrious, sober - of general good character, and not likely to become a burthen to the Colony. From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol I

EDITORS COMMENTS
captures the poignant moment of British working class families embarking on a journey to Canada, Australia, and other colonies in search of a better life. This powerful print reflects the vast numbers of individuals who took advantage of government grants to leave their native shores and seek new opportunities abroad. In the mid-19th century, many agricultural and manufacturing workers faced dire living conditions that fueled their desire for change. The application form required male applicants to possess specific skills such as agricultural laborers, shepherds, bricklayers, masons, wheelwrights, smiths, or carpenters. However, above all else, they had to be honest, industrious individuals with good character traits and not likely to become burdens on the colony. The image showcases a covered wagon filled with hopeful migrants ready for departure. Their faces reveal both excitement and trepidation as they bid farewell to their homeland. It is evident that this migration was driven by economic necessity rather than choice. This engraving from "Illustrated London News" serves as a reminder of the hardships endured by those seeking employment opportunities during this era. It sheds light on the social class divide prevalent at the time while highlighting the determination and resilience of these migrant workers. As we reflect upon this historical photograph today, it reminds us of our shared human experience - striving for a better future amidst challenging circumstances.
