His Royal Highness Prince Albert, the esteemed consort of Queen Victoria, graced the shores of London on a chilly autumn day in 1856 to lay the foundation stone of a remarkable new institution: The Strangers' Home. This charitable endeavor, located near Limehouse Church, was established to provide temporary shelter, comfort, and support to seafaring men and travelers from India, Arabia, Africa, China, the Straits of Malacca, Mozambique, and the South Pacific islands. The utter wretchedness of many Lascar seamen and other foreigners in this unfamiliar land was a cause of great concern. Friendless, homeless, and destitute, these individuals often found themselves in dire straits, unable to communicate effectively with the native population and unable to understand the language spoken around them. The foundation stone-laying ceremony was an impressive affair, attended by numerous dignitaries and distinguished guests. Among them were Maharajah Dhuleep Singh and several other esteemed Oriental visitors, who donned their magnificent national costumes to honor the occasion. Colonel Sykes, the Chairman of the East India Company, presided over the event. As the Prince placed the foundation stone, the crowd held their breath, knowing that this building would offer a much-needed respite to those who would find themselves in need during their temporary sojourn in London. This poignant moment, captured by the skilled lens of Edmund Evans, serves as a testament to the compassionate spirit of the era and the enduring desire to help those in need, regardless of their place of origin.
