EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a magnificent centerpiece sugar sculpture that personifies the triumph of Catholicism in England. Created for a grand banquet hosted by British Ambassador Roger Palmer on January 14,1687, at the Palazzo Pamphilj on Piazza Navona in Rome, this table sculpture is an allegorical composition celebrating England's return to Catholicism. The sculpture depicts the Church seated upon a radiant sun, accompanied by Truth and revealed by Time. The Valour of the King is represented as a warrior who banishes Discord and Fraud. At the bottom, the hydra of Rebellion lies decapitated while above are displayed the arms of both England and the Pope. The intricate details captured in this etching highlight not only its artistic brilliance but also its symbolic significance. It serves as a powerful visual representation of religious unity and strength during this period. With "HON, I, SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE" inscribed within a shield and "DIEV: ET: MON DROIT" written on a banderole, this masterpiece exudes regality and divine authority. This remarkable print from Liszt Collection allows us to appreciate not only the craftsmanship involved in creating such an elaborate sugar sculpture but also offers insight into historical events surrounding Catholicism's resurgence in England.
