EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning marble sarcophagus, dating back to the 4th century BC, is a testament to the artistic and historical significance of the ancient world. Known as the Alexander Sarcophagus, it was discovered in the Royal Necropolis of Sidon, Lebanon, and is now housed in the Archaeological Museum in Istanbul, Turkey. The long side of the sarcophagus depicts an epic scene from the Battle of Issus (333 BC), a pivotal moment in ancient history when Alexander the Great defeated the Persian king Darius III. In this intricately carved bas-relief, Alexander is depicted in the heat of battle, leading his cavalry charge against the Persian forces. The detail is so lifelike that one can almost hear the clash of swords and the thunderous hooves of the charging horses. Alexander's strong and determined form is contrasted by the chaos and disorder of the Persian ranks, with their animalistic expressions and disorganized attack. The sarcophagus' interior chamber is equally impressive, with intricate carvings of various episodes from the Battle of Issus. The historical and cultural importance of this artifact cannot be overstated, as it provides a rare glimpse into the visual representation of one of the most famous battles in ancient history. The Hellenic League, under the leadership of Alexander, changed the course of history, and this sarcophagus serves as a lasting reminder of that age and its great achievements.
