EDITORS COMMENTS
The Gospels of Henry the Lion, an exquisite 12th century illuminated manuscript, is a testament to the artistic and religious heritage of the Middle Ages. Commissioned for the altar of the Virgin Mary at Brunswick Cathedral, this masterpiece was produced in Prague in 1594 by the Order of Saint Benedict. Henry the Lion, Duke of Saxony and Bavaria, was the intended recipient of this magnificent gospel book. The cover, adorned with intricate gold and silver filigree, showcases the regal power and wealth of its patron. Inside, the 266-page manuscript is filled with 50 full-page illustrations, each meticulously crafted by skilled artists. These illustrations depict scenes from the life of Christ and the stories of the four evangelists, bringing the sacred texts to life in vivid detail. The Gospels of Henry the Lion is a prime example of Romanesque illuminated manuscripts, a style that flourished in Europe during the 11th and 12th centuries. This art form combined the illumination of texts with the decorative arts, creating visually stunning works that were both functional and beautiful. The manuscript was acquired by the German government in 1983 for over 8 million pounds at Sotheby's in London. Today, it is preserved and displayed as a national treasure, a reminder of the rich artistic and religious history of the Middle Ages. The Gospels of Henry the Lion continue to captivate viewers with their intricate designs, stunning illustrations, and historical significance.
