EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print showcases the intricately sculpted South side of the Ara Pacis Augustae, a monumental altar dedicated to the goddess Pax (Peace) and the emperor Augustus in Rome, Italy. The processional frieze at the center of the panel depicts Augustus and his family, along with various gods and allegorical figures, participating in a ritual procession. The distinctive acanthus frieze that frames the procession is adorned with scrolls, laurel wreaths, and other decorative elements. Augustus, dressed in a toga and wearing a cap adorned with an axe and a cap of liberty, leads the procession with a lictor, a magistrate responsible for enforcing the law, following behind. Mythological figures, such as the goddess Venus and the goddess Roma, are also present, symbolizing the divine support for Augustus' leadership. The relief is dated to the 13th century BC and is a masterpiece of Roman art. The relief's distinctive style, with its smooth surfaces and finely detailed figures, is characteristic of the Augustan period. The Ara Pacis Augustae is now housed in the Museum of the Ara Pacis in Rome, where it continues to captivate visitors with its beauty and historical significance.
