Canvas Prints from Science Photo Library
Cocksfoot pollen
False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of two pollen grains of cocksfoot grass, Dactylis glomerata, a major cause of hay fever (allergic rhinitis). The pit on the right-hand grain is the germination pore, out which the pollen tube grows. Cocksfoot pollen is a wind-dispersed summer pollen. Hay fever sufferers produce a sensitising antibody, immunoglobin E (IgE), which attaches to cells in the nose & eyes. It reacts with inhaled pollen, causing the release of various chemicals including histamine. Histamine causes the mucous membranes of the nose, eyes, & throat to swell & become inflamed, bringing on the symptoms of hay fever. Magnification: x570 at 6x4.5cm size. JBU colouring: blue & orange. BW original is B786/073

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of cocksfoot pollen, a notorious trigger for hay fever or allergic rhinitis. The false-color scanning electron micrograph (SEM) reveals two spherical pollen grains from Dactylis glomerata, commonly known as cocksfoot grass. One grain exhibits a germination pore on its right-hand side, which serves as an exit point for the emerging pollen tube. Cocksfoot pollen is dispersed by wind during the summer season, making it particularly troublesome for individuals suffering from hay fever. Those affected by this condition produce immunoglobin E (IgE), a sensitizing antibody that attaches to cells in their nose and eyes. When inhaled pollen comes into contact with these antibodies, various chemicals including histamine are released. Histamine triggers swelling and inflammation of the mucous membranes in the nose, eyes, and throat—leading to the classic symptoms associated with hay fever. This SEM image at 570 times magnification provides valuable insight into how such tiny particles can wreak havoc on our respiratory system. The blue and orange JBU coloring enhances visual contrast while maintaining scientific accuracy. With its detailed depiction of reproductive structures within plants and its relevance to allergen research, this photograph offers both aesthetic appeal and educational value for those interested in nature's microscopic wonders.
