F / col TEM of erythroblast in bone marrow
False-colour transmission electron micrograph of erythroblasts, primitive red blood cells, in human bone marrow. Erythropoiesis, the formation of mature red cells, is directed towards the production of a cell without organelles such as a nucleus; instead it is packed with haemoglobin. These primitve cells still show the nuclei as dominant oval shapes surrounded by pink cytoplasm. An original stem cell differentiates to form a proerythroblast, a large nucleated cell with no haemoglobin. The increase in haemoglobin proceeds with a gradual loss of all organelles. Magnification: x 5000 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate process of erythropoiesis, the formation of mature red blood cells, within the bone marrow. The false-colour transmission electron micrograph reveals a mesmerizing display of erythroblasts, primitive red blood cells in their various stages of development. In this image, we witness the transformation of an original stem cell into a proerythroblast, a large nucleated cell devoid of haemoglobin. As these cells progress towards maturity, they gradually lose all organelles and become packed with haemoglobin. However, even at this early stage, we can still observe dominant oval-shaped nuclei surrounded by pink cytoplasm. The magnification level provided for this photograph is an astounding x 5000 at 6x7cm size. This allows us to appreciate the intricate details and delicate structures involved in erythropoiesis within human bone marrow. Through this remarkable visual representation captured by Science Photo Library's talented photographers, we gain insight into the complex journey that leads to the production of fully functional red blood cells essential for oxygen transport throughout our bodies. It serves as a reminder of both the beauty and complexity found within our own anatomy and highlights how science continues to unravel its mysteries.
