Geranium flower
Geranium flower. Macrophotograph of the reproduc- tive parts of a Geranium clarkei flower. Several stamens are seen around the central carpel (dark, upper centre). Stamens are the male reproductive parts of a flower, and comprise a pollen-bearing anther held on a long filament (pale pink). Pollen grains (yellow) are the male sex cells of the flower. The carpel is the female part of the flow- er. Pollen from another flower of the same species is deposited on its tip (stigma) and travels down the long style to fertilise an ovary (not seen). These flowers are pollinated by insects, which carry pollen from flower to flower as they feed on nectar. Magnification: x3.3 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning macro photograph captures the intricate reproductive parts of a Geranium clarkei flower. The vibrant geranium petals serve as a backdrop to showcase the delicate stamens and carpel at the center of the bloom. The stamens, represented by several slender filaments in pale pink, bear anthers that hold pollen grains - the male sex cells of the flower. Meanwhile, the dark central carpel represents the female part of this beautiful blossom. The image highlights nature's remarkable process of reproduction as pollen from another flower is deposited on the stigma, located at the tip of the carpel. From there, it travels down a long style to fertilize an unseen ovary within this geranium. These particular flowers rely on insects for pollination; as they feed on nectar, they inadvertently carry pollen from one flower to another. This symbiotic relationship ensures successful reproduction for these geraniums. Captured with magnification at 3.3 times its original size and presented in exquisite detail, this photograph showcases not only botanical beauty but also serves as a visual testament to nature's complex mechanisms. It invites us to marvel at how plants have evolved sophisticated methods for ensuring their survival through reproduction.
