Northern constellations, 18th century

Northern constellations. 18th-century map of constellations and stars of the northern celestial hemisphere. The constellations are represented by artworks of their mythical namesakes. At bottom is a key for the magnitude (brightness) of the stars. The northern celestial pole and the line of the ecliptic are both shown. The title and labels are in French, with the Roman numerals 1 to 24 around the maps circumference. This map appeared in both the 1776 and 1795 editions of Jean N. Fortins Atlas Celeste de Flamsteed, a French edition of the posthumous 1729 atlas by British astronomer John Flamsteed (1646-1719)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 18th-century print showcases the beauty and wonder of the northern constellations. The map, adorned with intricate illustrations representing their mythical namesakes, takes us on a celestial journey through the night sky. With French titles and labels, this piece is a testament to both scientific exploration and artistic expression. The brilliance of the stars is indicated by a key at the bottom, allowing us to appreciate their varying magnitudes. The presence of the northern celestial pole and the line of the ecliptic further enhance our understanding of these astronomical wonders. Originally featured in Jean N. Fortin's Atlas Celeste de Flamsteed in 1776 and later in its 1795 edition, this print pays homage to British astronomer John Flamsteed's posthumous atlas from 1729. It serves as a historical artifact that bridges cultures and time periods. Each constellation depicted holds its own significance within mythology, history, and astronomy itself. From Aries to Gemini, Taurus to Andromeda, Perseus to Cassiopeia - they all come alive on this monochrome masterpiece. As we explore this visual representation of our universe's mysteries, we are reminded not only of humanity's fascination with the cosmos but also how art can beautifully intertwine with science. This print invites us into an enchanting world where imagination meets knowledge – truly capturing the essence of European history during the 1700s.
