Edwin Hubbleas Galaxy Classification System

Artists concept of Edwin Hubbles galaxy classification system, created to classify galaxies depending on their appearance, This system is sometimes called Hubbles Tuning Fork. At the left are elliptical galaxies, which are classified depending on how round they appear. The scale goes from E0 (the roundest) to E7, the most elliptical. Further to the right are lenticular galaxies, which are an intermediary class between ellipticals and spirals (classified SA0 or SB0, depending on if they have a bar at the core). To the right are the spiral galaxies, and they are classified depending on how tightly coiled (Sa, Sb and Sc) the spiral arms are (top branch), and if their core hosts a barred shape (bottom branch). The barred galaxies get the classification SBa, SBb and SBc, where SBa has the most tightly coiled arms

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Edwin Hubble's groundbreaking galaxy classification system, known as Hubble's Tuning Fork. The artist's concept beautifully illustrates the different types of galaxies based on their appearance. Starting from the left, we see elliptical galaxies, which are categorized according to their roundness. Ranging from E0 (the most spherical) to E7 (the most elongated), these celestial objects exhibit a mesmerizing variety of shapes. Moving towards the center, lenticular galaxies take their place as an intermediary class between ellipticals and spirals. Classified as SA0 or SB0 depending on whether they possess a bar at their core, these enigmatic entities add another layer of complexity to our understanding of galactic morphology. Finally, on the right side of this cosmic diagram lie spiral galaxies. Their classification is determined by the tightness of their coiled spiral arms: Sa for tightly wound arms, Sb for intermediate winding, and Sc for loosely wound arms. Additionally, if a spiral galaxy hosts a barred shape at its core, it receives an additional designation: SBa being the most tightly coiled. This digitally generated image not only highlights the immense beauty found in our universe but also serves as a valuable tool for astronomers studying galactic structures and evolution. Through careful observation and comparison using Hubble's sequence, scientists can unravel the mysteries hidden within each category while appreciating the contrasting variations that make up our vast cosmos.
