Oriana (oil on panel)

659929 Oriana (oil on panel) by Hughes, Arthur (1832-1915) and Hunt, William Holman (1827-1910); 91.5x70.5 cm; Private Collection; (add.info.: It is suspected that although labelled Arthur Hughes, the work may have been completed by Arthurs Nephew, E. R. Hughes who worked closely with Holman Hunt. Oriana was a princess, daughter of Lisuarte, sister of Leonoretta, wife of Amadis of Gaul. She loved Amadis but, when he rode to the aid of the princess Briolania, she thought that he had deserted her and wrote him a letter terminating their relationship. When Durin returned with Gandolin and told Oriana of the effect her letter had on Amadis, she repented of her cruelty and wrote another letter asking forgiveness. When he read the second letter he hurried back to Britain where the lovers were re-united); Photo © Christies Images

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite oil painting titled "Oriana" by Arthur Hughes and William Holman Hunt. Measuring 91.5x70.5 cm, this piece is part of a private collection and holds an intriguing backstory. Although initially attributed to Arthur Hughes, there is speculation that his nephew, E. R. Hughes, may have had a hand in its completion due to their close collaboration with Holman Hunt. The painting depicts Oriana, a princess who finds herself torn between love and betrayal. The composition portrays Oriana standing outdoors in the darkness, concealing her emotions behind her armor and sword. This nineteenth-century masterpiece captures the complexity of human relationships through its use of symbolism and fine art techniques. The image evokes a sense of mystery as it reveals Oriana's hidden intentions amidst a nocturnal setting. The artist skillfully portrays her protective stance while also hinting at an affair concealed within the shadows. With its romantic undertones and medieval influences, this Pre-Raphaelite artwork transports viewers into a world filled with deception and amorous intrigue. The careful attention to detail in both the female protagonist's dress and weaponry adds depth to the narrative portrayed on canvas. Overall, this print offers viewers an opportunity to appreciate British art from the late nineteenth century while immersing themselves in a timeless love story shrouded in secrecy and longing for forgiveness.
