This portrait, entitled "Giuseppe Garibaldi" by the Italian artist Girolamo Induno, was created in 1876, during a time of great historical significance for Italy. Induno (1825-1890) masterfully captured the essence of the legendary revolutionary leader, Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882), who played a pivotal role in the Italian Unification and the Risorgimento, the resurgence of Italian nationalism. Born in Nice, then part of the Kingdom of Sardinia, Garibaldi became a sailor at a young age and later joined the Carbonari, a secret society advocating for Italian independence. He gained fame for leading the Expedition of the Thousand, a volunteer army that successfully invaded Sicily in 1860, paving the way for Italian unification under King Victor Emmanuel II. Induno's portrait beautifully encapsulates the spirit of Garibaldi, showcasing his intense gaze, expressive facial features, and military attire.
