EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Johann Carl Bock in 1786 for Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers' Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur (The Butterflies in Representations according to Nature), showcases two intriguing moth species: the Rosy Footman (Miltochrista miniata) and the Short-cloaked Moth (Nola cucullatella). The Rosy Footman, also known as the Yellow Tiger or Rosy Arctia, is depicted in various stages of its life cycle. The adult moth, with its rosy-hued wings adorned with black and yellow stripes, is shown at the bottom left of the image. Above it, a caterpillar with distinctive white, ermine-like markings crawls on a twig. The pupa, or chrysalis, is illustrated at the top left, encased in a silky cocoon. The Short-cloaked Moth, also known as the White-marked Tiger Moth or the White-ermine, is depicted in various stages as well. The adult moth, with its short-cloaked, white wings adorned with black and orange stripes, is shown at the bottom right of the image. Above it, a caterpillar with white, spiky projections and a brown head is crawling on a leaf. The pupa, or chrysalis, is illustrated at the top right, with a brown, spiky exterior. The intricate details and vibrant colors of this engraving showcase the beauty and diversity of these moth species. The metamorphosis from caterpillar to adult is a fascinating aspect of the insect world, and this engraving provides a stunning visual representation of this natural process. Entomology enthusiasts and collectors of historical scientific illustrations will appreciate the high-quality and artistic detail of this rare and valuable print.
