Coloured barium X-ray of an inguinal hernia
Inguinal hernia. Coloured barium X-ray of a left inguinal (groin) hernia (small white protrusion, lower right) in a mans large intestine. Barium (red & white) has pooled in the intestine. A hernia, or rupture, is a protrusion of an organ or tissue through the wall of the body cavity in which it lies. In an inguinal hernia, part of the large intestine pushes into the inguinal canal, the passage that connects the abdominal cavity to the scrotum in a man, resulting in a bulge in the groin or scrotum. This hernia may have been caused by physical straining or even coughing. Treatment is with surgery. Enemas of radio-opaque barium allow the large intestine to be seen on X-ray

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases a coloured barium X-ray of an inguinal hernia, providing a unique glimpse into the inner workings of the human body. The image captures a left inguinal hernia in a man's large intestine, with a small white protrusion visible in the lower right corner. The use of barium, depicted in red and white hues, highlights how it has pooled within the intestine. A hernia is defined as the protrusion of an organ or tissue through its surrounding body cavity wall. In this case, part of the large intestine pushes into the inguinal canal – connecting the abdominal cavity to the scrotum – resulting in a noticeable bulge in either area. This particular hernia may have been caused by physical straining or even coughing. The significance of this image lies not only in its visual appeal but also its medical implications. It serves as an educational tool for healthcare professionals and students alike, shedding light on various aspects such as disease conditions, disorders, and treatment options like surgery. By utilizing enemas containing radio-opaque barium during X-ray procedures, medical practitioners are able to visualize and diagnose abnormalities within the large intestine more effectively. This invaluable insight aids them in formulating appropriate treatment plans tailored to each patient's needs. In summary, this thought-provoking photograph provides us with valuable insights into one aspect of medical science: inguinal hernias and their diagnosis using coloured barium X-rays.
