Coloured X-ray image of a normal knee-joint

Normal knee. Coloured X-ray image of a healthy knee, showing the joint between the femur or thigh-bone (top) and tibia (the larger bone at bottom). This is a frontal view of the left leg. The patella, also known as the kneecap, occurs in the region of the head of the femur coloured dark red. Two discs (unseen) of cartilage, the menisci, cover the end of the femur and tibia. These discs reduce the friction between the bones during movement and increase the stability of the knee. The fibula is the thin long bone of the lower leg (at bottom left)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured X-ray image of a perfectly healthy knee-joint. The frontal view of the left leg reveals the intricate joint between the femur, or thigh-bone, and the tibia, which is the larger bone at the bottom. In this image, we can clearly observe the patella, commonly known as the kneecap, appearing in a striking dark red hue near the head of the femur. The remarkable functionality of this joint lies in two unseen discs made of cartilage called menisci. These essential components cover both ends of both bones - femur and tibia - reducing friction during movement while simultaneously enhancing stability within our knees. Additionally, we notice another bone present in this composition: the fibula. Positioned towards the lower left side, it serves as a thin but elongated structure within our lower leg. This extraordinary snapshot not only provides us with an insight into skeletal anatomy but also emphasizes how each element works harmoniously to support human mobility. By capturing these intricate details through advanced imaging techniques like coloured X-rays, Science Photo Library continues to enlighten us about our own bodies' complexity and beauty without mentioning any commercial use intentions.
