EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable celestial manuscript map created in 1863 by Hattie E. Rogers, an American folk artist. Measuring an impressive 143.5x239 cm, the map is meticulously crafted using cloth, embroidery, and pen and ink on paper. The stars are intricately stitched onto a Cambridge blue background composed of 17 panels of cloth, with some labeled in contemporary ink manuscript. The celestial map depicts the stars to five orders of magnitude and features crease folds that correspond with the correct latitude and longitude astral coordinates. On the verso of the top edge, linen lining with small hanging loops adds both functionality and aesthetic appeal. Two small paper labels stitched to the sides provide additional information about this extraordinary piece. They state that it is inspired by Elijah J. Burritt's "A Celestial Planisphere" from 1835 and include details about its maker and place of manufacture. Considered a very rare survival of 19th-century American folk art demonstrating celestial cartography, this fine example hails from upstate New York. Hattie E. Rogers' talent as an artist is further acknowledged in her brother's book "History of the town of Paris" where she is mentioned as having served as a music teacher in Paris school in 1878. Preserved within a private collection, this photograph allows us to marvel at the beauty and craftsmanship behind this unique piece that seamlessly combines artistry with scientific accuracy.
