Call to Hell, fdetail showing the Antehell, taken from Dantes description, 1500-02 (fresco)

6262771 Call to Hell, fdetail showing the Antehell, taken from Dantes description, 1500-02 (fresco) by Signorelli, Luca (c.1450-1523); Duomo (Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta), Orvieto, Umbria, Italy; (add.info.: The interior, Chapel Nova or St. Brizio Chapel, southern wall
A group of slothers has a demon bearing a white banner, while in the centre you can see Charon ready to ferry the damned, destined, lower down, to the judgment of Minos. The latter is portrayed when he commits punishment to a damned man by a demons hair, wrapping his tail around his body as many times as the number of the group he is destined for. Further on, on the " proscenium", a devil with blue flesh makes to hit a damned man by holding his hair: the crudeness of the scene interested Michelangelo, who in fact copied it.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a mesmerizing detail from Luca Signorelli's fresco "Call to Hell" in the Duomo (Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta) in Orvieto, Italy. The image showcases the Antehell, as described by Dante in his literary masterpiece. In this particular scene, a group of slothful souls is depicted seeking refuge behind a demon bearing a white banner. At the center of attention stands Charon, ready to ferry these damned individuals to their ultimate judgment by Minos. The artist masterfully portrays Minos inflicting punishment upon one unfortunate soul, using a demonic hair wrapped around his body as many times as there are members in the slothful group destined for that circle. Moving towards the "proscenium" we encounter another devil with blue flesh preparing to strike another condemned individual while gripping their hair tightly. This raw and brutal depiction caught the interest of none other than Michelangelo himself, who was so captivated by its intensity that he chose to replicate it. The photograph was taken inside the Basilica Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta (or Duomo), specifically within the Chapel Nova or St. Brizio Chapel on its southern wall. It beautifully captures Signorelli's skillful execution and attention to detail. This stunning print serves as both an homage to Signorelli's artistic genius and an invitation for viewers to explore Dante's vivid descriptions brought to life through visual artistry at its finest.
