Coat of arms 17th century Morgan and Tomkins

This image is from a copperplate engraving, and shows part of a roll of arms from Richard Blomes Britannia, an atlas published in 1673. It features the coats of arms of people who contributed towards the completion of the work a starting with King Charles II. Each page includes 35 coats of arms, presented here in pairs. These two coats of arms are from folio (page) 23 of the work. In old English, ans appeared as a longs (which looks like an f ), while ss appeared as fs. Com was an abbreviation for County. A number is assigned to each benefactor. Here are the accompanying texts (followed by modernised English where appropriate): 748. William MORGAN of Newton in Brecknockfhire Efq (Brecknockshire / Breconshire, Wales). 749. Vuedale TOMKYNS of Monnington Upon Wye Com Hereford (Uvedale Tomkins of Monnington-on-Wye)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a 17th-century copperplate engraving of the Coat of Arms belonging to Morgan and Tomkins. The image is taken from Richard Blome's Britannia, an esteemed atlas published in 1673. Within this remarkable work, each page features pairs of coats of arms representing individuals who contributed to its completion, beginning with King Charles II. The two coats of arms depicted here can be found on folio (page) 23. It is important to note that during this era, the old English style used "ans" as a longs (resembling an f), while "ss" was represented by fs. Additionally, "com" served as an abbreviation for County. Accompanying these intricate illustrations are texts providing information about the benefactors assigned numbers within the atlas. William MORGAN hails from Newton in Brecknockshire, Wales (modernized as Breconshire). He holds the title Efq (Esquire). Vuedale TOMKYNS represents Monnington Upon Wye in Hereford County and is acknowledged as Uvedale Tomkins of Monnington-on-Wye. This antique engraved image not only serves as a visual delight but also offers insights into historical connections and friendships among influential families during that time period. With its ornate design and rich symbolism, this print beautifully captures British culture and traditional values associated with family heritage and decoration. Overall, Whiteway's print presents us with a fascinating glimpse into heraldic history through its portrayal of armorial acknowledgements within Blome's roll of arms from the late 17th century.
