Coat of arms copperplate 17th century Haslewood

This image is from a copperplate engraving, and shows part of a roll of arms from Richard Blomes Britannia, an atlas published in 1673. It features the coats of arms of people who contributed towards the completion of the work a starting with King Charles II. Each page includes 35 coats of arms, presented here in groups of two. These coats of arms are from folio (page) 10 of the work. In old English, ans appeared as a longs (which looks like an f ), while ss appeared as fs. Com was an abbreviation for County. A number is assigned to each benefactor. Here are the accompanying texts (followed by modernised English where appropriate): 293. Sir Will: HASLEWOOD of Maidwell in Northampton fhire of Kyesby in Com Lincolne & of Ortonbery in Com Devon Kt. (Sir William Haslewood; Northamptonshire; Ortonbery written as Orton-bery elsewhere, but location not identified; Knight). 294. Anthony HASLEWOOD of Ifton alias Ilverton in Com Leicester Efq

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of history, a copperplate engraving from the 17th century featuring the coat of arms of individuals who contributed to Richard Blome's Britannia atlas. The image, taken from folio 10 of the work, displays two groups of intricately designed coats of arms, with each page containing 35 in total. The significance and attention to detail in this print are truly awe-inspiring. It is fascinating to observe how old English writing conventions are reflected here, where "ans" appears as longs (resembling an 'f') and "ss" is depicted as 'fs'. Additionally, we can appreciate the abbreviation for County ('Com') used throughout. Amongst these distinguished coats of arms are those belonging to Sir William Haslewood and Anthony Haslewood. Sir William hails from Maidwell in Northamptonshire and also has connections to Kyesby in Lincolnshire and Ortonbery in Devon. Meanwhile, Anthony resides in Ifton alias Ilverton within Leicester County. This antique print not only serves as a visual delight but also offers valuable insights into British culture during this period. It symbolizes friendship, family heritage, acknowledgment for contributions made towards completing significant works like Britannia atlas while showcasing traditional heraldic symbols that were highly regarded at that time. Overall, this beautifully engraved image transports us back centuries ago when such illustrations were meticulously crafted on paper - a true testament to both artistic skill and historical importance.
