EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Monument to Alexander II in the Moscow Kremlin, Russia, dating back to around 1904-1905. The monument pays tribute to Alexander II, also known as "The Liberator" for his historic emancipation of serfs in 1861. However, his reign came to a tragic end when he was assassinated by a bomb thrown by a member of the revolutionary group Narodnaya Volya (Peoples Will) in St Petersburg. Originally erected in 1898, this magnificent monument stood tall until it met its demise at the hands of the Bolsheviks in 1918. Despite this act of destruction, a new monument dedicated to Alexander II was constructed on the same site in 2005. The image captures not only the grandeur and architectural beauty of this memorial but also provides us with an insight into Russian history and royalty during that era. The vibrant colors bring life to the photograph and highlight every intricate detail of both the building and statue itself. Preserved within the collection of the Russian State Film and Photo Archive at Krasnogorsk, this remarkable piece serves as a visual reminder of an influential figure who shaped Russia's past. It stands as a testament to resilience and remembrance while offering viewers an opportunity to reflect upon significant moments from our shared human history.
