EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of transportation - the Viaduct on the Croydon Atmospheric Railway, dating back to 1845. The creator of this remarkable image remains unknown, but their work has preserved a pivotal era in British railway development. The viaduct itself stands as an impressive structure, spanning across the Dover and Brighton lines between Norwood and Croydon in south London. This engineering marvel was part of a revolutionary system that utilized air pressure for locomotion, making it one of the earliest attempts at atmospheric railways. The photograph's monochrome tones evoke a sense of nostalgia, transporting us back to the bustling streets of Victorian England. It is fascinating to imagine trains traveling along these tracks at speeds unheard-of during that time period - reaching an astonishing seventy-five miles per hour with twelve carriages! As we gaze upon this historic scene captured by "Illustrated London News" in 1845, we are reminded of how far public transport has come since then. The completion of five miles on the Croydon Line marked a significant milestone in railway expansion. While we may not know who precisely documented this momentous occasion, their contribution allows us to appreciate both the ingenuity behind this early form of transportation and its lasting impact on modern society.
