EDITORS COMMENTS
Alfs Button: A Delightful 1920s Take on the Classic Aladdin Tale, by W A Darlington This photograph, taken in 1924, showcases a scene from Alfs Button, a unique and entertaining adaptation of the beloved Aladdin story written by W A Darlington. The play, which premiered at the Theatre Royal in Portsmouth on August 25, 1924, later graced the stages of Golders Green in London on September 22, and the Princes Theatre during the holiday season on December 24 of the same year. Darlington, who went on to become a long-time theatre critic for The Daily Telegraph, brought a fresh and imaginative approach to the traditional pantomime (panto) format. In this photograph, we see a soldier, dressed in khaki uniform and polishing his turban, alongside Alfs Button, who is seen intently rubbing and cleaning a pink button. The presence of soldiers and a military theme adds a striking element to this version of the Aladdin story. The 1920s, also known as the Roaring Twenties, was an era of cultural and social change, and Alfs Button reflects the excitement and innovation of the time. The play's success can be attributed to its ability to blend the classic elements of the Aladdin tale with contemporary elements, making it a must-see entertainment for audiences in the 1920s and beyond. This photograph, taken by John Hassall for The Michael Diamond Collection, is a captivating snapshot of a bygone era and a testament to the enduring appeal of the Aladdin story.
