This engraving, titled "Tobias and the Angel," is a stunning work by the renowned French artist and engraver, Paul Gustave Doré. Doré, born in 1832, was known for his intricate and detailed illustrations, particularly in religious and mythological themes. This particular piece is from his illustrated Bible, published in 1866. In the image, we see the biblical figure Tobias, a righteous and pious man, depicted in the upper right corner of the print. He is shown with a serious expression, dressed in white, and holding a staff. Above him, an angel in human form, with wings spread, looks down upon him with a protective gaze. The scene takes place in the Book of Tobit from the Old Testament. Tobias, having been instructed by the angel Raphael to take a journey to Media to retrieve the possessions of his family, encounters the angel on his journey. The angel then helps Tobias by healing his blindness and guiding him to marry Sarah, a woman who was previously believed to be cursed. The engraving captures the moment of divine intervention, with Tobias in awe of the angel's presence.
