EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Electric Eel, Electrophorus electricus, in its banded form, also known as the Banded Knifefish or Gymnotus carapo. The image is taken from the "Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles" published by F.G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830. The illustration was painted by Jean Gabriel Pretre, a natural history painter at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The engraving was executed by Massard, under the direction of Turpin. The Electric Eel is a unique and fascinating species of fish, native to the freshwaters of South America. It is the only electric fish that is an eel, and it generates an electric discharge by means of specialized organs called electrocytes, located in its tail. This eel can produce electric shocks of up to 600 volts and 1 ampere, which it uses for hunting, defense, and communication. The bands visible on its body are not scales, but rather rows of small electric organs. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving captures the Electric Eel's unique features and showcases the exceptional skill of the artist and engraver. The use of handcoloring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a true masterpiece of natural history illustration.
