The painting was created by George Forster during Captain James Cook's second voyage of discovery, which took place between 1772 and 1775. Forster, a naturalist and the son of the expedition's official scientist Johann Georg Adam Forster, skillfully captured the Serval's distinctive spotted coat and elegant form in this work.
