This stunning 18th century illustration depicts the Serval (Leptailurus serval), a beautiful and elusive wild cat native to Africa. The painting was created by George Forster during Captain James Cook's second voyage of discovery, which took place between 1772 and 1775. Forster, a naturalist and the son of the expedition's official scientist Johann Georg Adam Forster, skillfully captured the Serval's distinctive spotted coat and elegant form in this work.
