EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving showcases the awe-inspiring Egyptian architecture of the temples of Dendera and Karnak, located in Luxor. The intricately detailed bas-reliefs adorning the temples are a testament to the ancient Egyptians' mastery of sculpture and their deep reverence for their gods. At the temple of Dendera, dedicated to the goddess Hathor, we see a bas-relief of Tentyra, a form of Hathor, depicted as a woman with the horns of a cow and the solar disk between them. The relief is adorned with intricate patterns and hieroglyphics, adding to the sacredness of the temple. In contrast, the temple of Karnak, dedicated to the god Amun, is depicted with its massive columns and towering structures. The colossal statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, flanking the entrance, are a sight to behold. The Pharaoh is shown wearing the crown of the sun god, symbolizing his divine status. The engraving also includes the statues of the Colossi of Memnon, two massive stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, located in the Theban Necropolis. The statues were believed to have the power to bring rain and were a popular tourist attraction during ancient times. This engraving is from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Antique and Modern of All Peoples," published in Florence in 1843. It provides a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of ancient Egypt and offers insights into its architecture, religion, and history.
