EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Johann Carl Bock after Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers' Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur (The Butterflies and Moths in Representations according to Nature), showcases a fascinating array of moths, including the Garden Dart or Euxoa nigricans (1), as well as several other species. The Garden Dart is a small, brown moth with distinctive white markings on its wings. Numbered in the engraving are the Hadena filograna (2), Calophasia platyptera (3), Simyra nervosa (4), Antirrhinum brocade (5), and various other moths. The Hadena filograna, also known as the Pale Wave, is a medium-sized moth with a wingspan of about 3.5 centimeters. The Calophasia platyptera, or the Broad-winged, is a large moth with a wingspan of up to 5 centimeters. The Simyra nervosa, or the Nervous Wave, is a small moth with a wingspan of around 2 centimeters. The Antirrhinum brocade (5) is a beautiful orchid, providing a lovely backdrop for these moths. This engraving is an excellent representation of the intricacies of moth anatomy, from their pupal stages to their adult forms. The moths in this image belong to various families within the Lepidoptera order, including the Phalaenidae (dart moths), Noctuidae (owlet moths), and others. The metamorphosis of a moth from a caterpillar to an adult is a fascinating process, characterized by the pupa stage. During this stage, the caterpillar forms a chrysalis, which protects the developing moth. Once the transformation is complete, the adult moth emerges, ready to begin its life cycle anew. This stunning engraving is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the moth world, captured in intricate detail by the skilled hand of Johann Carl Bock. It is a valuable addition to any collection of entomological or natural history prints.
