EDITORS COMMENTS
"This print, dated 1885, showcases a collection of locomotives that revolutionized the railway industry on the Stockton & Darlington and North Eastern Railways between 1825 and 1848. The illustrations provide intricate details and measurements for each engine, offering a glimpse into the engineering marvels of the time. At the forefront is the "Locomotion No. 1," the world's first public railway locomotive, which opened the Stockton & Darlington Railway on September 27, 1825. This historic engine, designed by George Stephenson, boasted a 4-2-2 wheel arrangement and a total length of 12.2 meters (40 feet). Next to it is the "Blucher," a locomotive that set a new standard for railway power and efficiency in 1834. With a 0-4-0 wheel arrangement and a length of 7.3 meters (24 feet), this engine was an essential workhorse for the North Eastern Railway. Another notable engine in this print is the "Royal Scot," which debuted on the Stockton & Darlington Railway in 1835. This 2-2-2 locomotive, with a length of 10.4 meters (34 feet), was a significant improvement over earlier designs, featuring a more efficient boiler and a larger firebox. The print also includes scenes from the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway, showcasing the excitement and wonder that accompanied the dawn of the railway age. The evolution of these early locomotives, as depicted in this print, is a testament to the ingenuity and innovation that shaped the railway industry in the 19th century."
