EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Giarre for Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1847, showcases four significant Medieval rulers of Hungary: Queen Regnant Maria (Mary) I, King Bela IV, Wenceslaus III of Bohemia, and Matthias Corvinus. Maria I, depicted in the center, was the last Hungarian queen to rule alone before the Ottoman conquest. She ascended to the throne in 1452, following the death of her husband, King Albrecht II of Germany. Her reign was marked by her successful defense against the Ottoman invasion at the Battle of Belgrade in 1456. To her left is King Bela IV, who ruled Hungary from 1235 to 1270. He is best known for his role in the defense against the Mongol invasion in 1241, which devastated much of the country. Bela's leadership and diplomacy helped Hungary recover from the invasion and maintain its independence. Wenceslaus III of Bohemia, shown on the right, was king of Hungary from 1305 to 1306. He was also the King of Bohemia from 1305 to 1306. Although his reign was brief, it was marked by his attempts to strengthen the power of the monarchy and improve the administration of the kingdom. At the bottom left is Matthias Corvinus, one of Hungary's most famous rulers. He reigned from 1458 to 1490 and is known for his patronage of the arts, sciences, and education. Matthias expanded the borders of the kingdom and fortified its defenses against external threats. This engraving offers a fascinating glimpse into the appearance and symbolism of these Medieval rulers of Hungary, providing valuable insights into their historical significance and the cultural context of their reigns.
