EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Johann Carl Bock in 1786 for Eugenius Johann Christoph Esper's Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur, showcases two intriguing Lepidoptera species: the Nut-tree Tussock Moth (Colocasia coryli) and the Plumed Prominent Moth (Ptilophora plumigera). The Nut-tree Tussock Moth, also known as the Chocolate Tip Moth, is depicted with its distinctive, furry, brown and white caterpillar, which feeds on various trees including walnut and hickory. The adult moth, shown in the upper left corner, is characterized by its large, winged form with orange and black markings. The Plumed Prominent Moth, also known as the Scare Moth or the Anachoreta Moth, is illustrated in the upper right corner. Its caterpillar, which is small and pale, is adorned with a series of plumes, giving it a unique and intimidating appearance. The adult moth, with its wings spread, displays intricate patterns of brown, black, and white. Both species undergo complete metamorphosis, transforming from caterpillars to pupae and eventually to adult moths. This engraving is an exquisite example of 18th-century entomological illustration, providing a detailed and accurate record of these fascinating insects. The intricacy and beauty of the hand-coloring further enhance the overall appeal of this artwork.
