EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored steel engraving depicts an albino Sombre Hummingbird, Aphantochroa cirrochloris, a rare and intriguing avian species. The hummingbird is shown perched gracefully on a branch, its ethereal white plumage contrasting starkly against the rich greens of its natural habitat. The Sombre Hummingbird, also known as the Simple Hummingbird or Cirrochloris Hummingbird, is a small species native to the forests of Central and South America. This beautiful engraving is a reproduction of an illustration by Jean-Gabriel Pretre, created for Rene Primevere's "Lessons Natural History of the Colibri Genus of Hummingbirds," published by Arthus Betrand in Paris in 1830. The illustration was later engraved by Coutant, adding an additional layer of intricacy and detail to the final piece. The Sombre Hummingbird is a relatively small species, with an average length of just 3.5 inches. Its normal plumage is a dull grayish-brown, making the albino variety a truly unique find. Albino hummingbirds are extremely rare, with only a handful of documented cases. The lack of pigmentation in their feathers makes them more vulnerable to predation, as they stand out against their natural surroundings. Despite their rarity, hummingbirds are a fascinating and beloved group of birds. Known for their iridescent feathers, long beaks, and ability to hover in mid-air, they are a delight to observe in their natural habitats. This beautiful engraving serves as a testament to their beauty and intrigue, and a reminder of the natural wonders that can be found in the world around us.
