EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures a unique advertising piece from 1922, showcasing the iconic Roll Call tobacco and cigarettes by Players. The pull-out counter card, cleverly shaped like a pyramid, immediately draws attention to its central section featuring an elegantly dressed soldier in eighteenth-century uniform. With a cockade adorning his hat and smoking a short stemmed clay pipe, he exudes an air of sophistication. Above this image, a rectangular banner proudly displays the brand's name: "PLAYERs // ROLL CALL". As the back section stands higher than the banner, it showcases packs of both Roll Call tobacco and cigarettes. However, it is when the front section is extended that two half-sections form an exquisite frame for the soldier's portrait. The left-hand side of this remarkable card presents text indicating that Roll Call Tobacco costs "91/D per oz. ", while on the right-hand side we learn that their Cigarettes are priced at "2D per packet of 5". Along the bottom edge lie neatly arranged packs of both tobacco and cigarettes. Turning over this intriguing artifact reveals not only a mechanism to support its extended position but also unveils a label identifying Mardons as creators: specialists in window novelties, embossed showcards, varnishing techniques, gelatiners & frame making based in Bristol and London. This photograph serves as a fascinating glimpse into Nottingham's advertising history while highlighting John Player & Sons' innovative approach to promoting their beloved Roll Call products.
