Di-m-octyl phthalate

Di-n-octyl phthalate (DNOP). Computer artwork of a molecule of DNOP. It has the chemical formula C24.H38.O4. Atoms are represented as spheres and are colour-coded: carbon (grey), hydrogen (blue) and oxygen (red). Phthalates are a group of compounds widely used as plasticisers, substances that soften plastics. Phthalates do not chemically bind to the plastic and so readily leach out of it. This, with evidence that they may be carcinogenic, disrupt hormones and cause organ damage, led the European Union in June 2005 to ban the use of DNOP and other phthalates in toys and childcare articles that children could put in their mouths where their concentration exceeds 0.1% of the mass of the material

EDITORS COMMENTS
This computer artwork showcases a molecule of Di-n-octyl phthalate (DNOP), also known as Di-m-octyl phthalate. With its chemical formula C24. H38. O4, this compound is visually represented through spheres colored to indicate different atoms: carbon (grey), hydrogen (blue), and oxygen (red). Phthalates belong to a group of compounds widely utilized as plasticisers, substances that effectively soften plastics. However, the concerning fact is that these phthalates do not chemically bind to the plastic material, making them prone to leaching out easily. This characteristic, combined with mounting evidence suggesting their potential carcinogenic properties and ability to disrupt hormones while causing organ damage, prompted the European Union's decision in June 2005. Consequently, DNOP and other phthalates were banned from use in toys and childcare articles intended for children who could potentially put them in their mouths if their concentration exceeds 0.1% of the material's mass. This thought-provoking image serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with such hazardous compounds. It highlights the importance of understanding chemistry's impact on our environment and health by shedding light on banned substances like DNOP due to their toxic nature. As an illustration representing pollution concerns within our society today, it emphasizes how crucial it is for us to prioritize safer alternatives when it comes to manufacturing materials used daily.
