False-col SEM of fruit fly

False-colour scanning electron micrograph of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. The specimen is of the wild type, known as Oregon R. D. melanogaster has for many years been the subject of genetic experiments, particularly on mutation, because it was easy to raise in large numbers & reproduces rapidly. The waist between the head & thorax is characteristic of flies, allowing some mobility. The head carries the large multifaceted compound eyes. The antennae are reduced to small fleshy pads with bristle-like extensions called aristas. Bristles, or setae, cover the body. Magnification: x9 at 35mm size, x18 at 6x4.5cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-colour scanning electron micrograph of the remarkable fruit fly, scientifically known as Drosophila melanogaster. The specimen captured in this image represents the wild type variant called Oregon R, which has been extensively utilized in genetic experiments for decades due to its ease of cultivation and rapid reproduction. One striking feature visible in this SEM is the distinct waist that separates the head from the thorax, a characteristic trait shared by flies that allows them some degree of mobility. The head itself boasts large multifaceted compound eyes, providing these tiny creatures with exceptional visual acuity. Interestingly, their antennae have evolved into small fleshy pads adorned with bristle-like extensions called aristas. The entire body of this fruit fly is covered in bristles or setae, adding to its intriguing appearance under magnification. This particular print offers two different magnification levels: x9 at 35mm size and x18 at 6x4.5cm size, allowing viewers to appreciate even finer details. As an invaluable subject for genetic experimentation, Drosophila melanogaster continues to unravel mysteries surrounding mutation and inheritance patterns. Its significance lies not only in its contribution to scientific research but also in its representation of nature's intricate wonders within the realm of zoology and insect biology.
