Mite on bee, SEM

Mite on honeybee. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a mite (Varroa sp. upper centre) on the thorax of a honeybee (Apis mellifera). Mites are related to ticks and more distantly to spiders, in having four pairs of legs. Honeybee mites feed on the body fluid of adult bees and their pupae. Female mites lay their eggs inside the wax brood cells that contain larvae. The mites can cause significant damage to a bees development and infestation of a hive with mites can cause eventual destruction of the colony. Magnification: x9 when printed 10 cm wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intricate relationship between a mite and a honeybee. In this coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we witness the presence of a mite, belonging to the Varroa species, perched on the thorax of an Apis mellifera honeybee. Mites, distant relatives of ticks and spiders, possess four pairs of legs which they utilize for movement and attachment. However, their interaction with bees is far from benign. These tiny parasites feed on the body fluid of adult bees as well as their pupae, causing significant damage to their development. Female mites lay their eggs inside wax brood cells that house bee larvae, further exacerbating the infestation within hives. The consequences can be dire; colonies infiltrated by these blood-sucking pests face potential destruction over time. With a magnification factor of x9 when printed at 10 cm wide, this SEM image offers us an up-close glimpse into this parasitic relationship. It serves as a reminder not only of nature's complexity but also highlights the delicate balance necessary for healthy ecosystems. The photograph sheds light on varroatosis – a disease caused by these haematophagous mites – emphasizing their role as vectors for harmful pathogens among bees. This visual testament underscores both the vulnerability and resilience found in our natural world while urging us to appreciate and protect its intricate web of life.
