Muscles of the neck
Muscles of the neck, historical artwork. The upper figure shows the front of the neck with the skin and fascia (connective tissue) removed to expose the musculature (red) and tendons. The lower figure shows the muscles on the front and side of the neck as the head is twisted to its right. The left clavicle (collar bone) is exposed on both figures. The trachea (windpipe, white) is in the centre of the neck. Overlying the trachea is the thyroid gland, which secretes hormones to control the rate of metabolism. The major neck muscle from the ear to the base of the neck is the sternocleidomastoid. Published in The Muscles of the Human Body... by Jones Quain in 1836

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate and detailed muscles of the neck, depicted in a historical artwork from 1836. In this image, we are presented with two figures that unveil different perspectives of the neck's musculature. The upper figure exposes the front of the neck by removing both skin and fascia, revealing a network of vibrant red muscles and tendons. Meanwhile, the lower figure demonstrates how these muscles appear when the head is twisted to its right side. Notably visible in both figures is the left clavicle or collar bone, providing an anchor for these powerful neck muscles. Positioned at the center is the trachea or windpipe, represented as a white structure surrounded by cartilage rings. Overlying it lies the thyroid gland responsible for regulating metabolism through hormone secretion. One cannot overlook one prominent muscle showcased here -the sternocleidomastoid- which spans from ear to base of neck and plays a significant role in various movements involving our heads. Published within "The Muscles of Human Body" by Jones Quain during 19th century, this illustration serves as an invaluable resource for anatomical study. It offers insights into not only muscular structures but also bones, ligaments, tendons, and their interconnections within our body's complex musculoskeletal system. This remarkable historical image provides us with an opportunity to appreciate both scientific knowledge and artistic representation intertwined seamlessly in this stunning piece from Science Photo Library's collection.
